Sri Rama Navami Spl - Panakam,Vada Pappu n Chalimidi


Sri Ram Navami is the festival to celebrate the Birthday of Lord Shri Ram.Lord Shi Ram is the seventh incarnation of the Lord Maha Vishnu.When the evil forces were grown,to destroy and to establish dharma,Lord Maha Vishnu incarnated as Lord Sri Ramachandra.Lord Sri Ram was born to king Dasaratha and Kausalya.

This festival is celebrated on the ninth day of the hindu month of Chaitra(Chaitra Shudda Navami).The day of Shri Rama Navami is the final day of the nine-day celebrations of the Chaitra navaratri or vasantha Navaratri.



According to Hindu religious history,Sri Rama avatar is the most perfect incarnation of the Suprime Lord,Sri maha Vishnu.Sri Ramachandras respect and devotion to his parents especially to his father,his love and affection towards his brothers,his preference and love to his wife,his kind blessing to his people and devotes list him on the top.The prasadam made on this day are normally those that are coolant in nature.The following are the traditional recipes prepared during Sri Rama Navami at my parents place.



Panakam
Ingredients
Water - 1 glass
grated Jaggery - 2 tsp
pepper corns - 2 coarsely crushed
crushed cardamom - 1

Method
1.In a bowl,mix the jaggery in water and let it dissolve completely.Filter the jaggery water if necessary.

2.Add crushed cardamom and crushed pepper. Mix well and serve it or you can also refrigerate it and serve chilled panakam.


Vada Pappu
Ingredients
split yellow moong dal - 1 cup

Method
Soak the Moong Dal in water for half an hour, drain the water.
This is not cooked.It is eaten raw with Chalimidi..


Chalimidi
Ingredients
Rice flour -1 cup(Soak 1 cup raw rice in warm water for 3 to 4 hrs, drain and dry the rice in a dry cloth until it is completely dried and make a coarse powder) Or you can use readymade rice flour also.
Grated jaggery or sugar - 1/2 cup.
Crushed cardamom - 2
Grated coconut - 2 tsp(optional)
Water - to make dough

Method
Mix the rice flour, Jaggery and crushed cardamom by adding 1 to 2 tsp water to make a soft dough.

Or

Make a warm syrup of jaggery (or sugar) and add the rice flour in low heat and mix to form a soft dough. Add cardamom and coconut at the end and mix well.
